It was just her and me and "the children". I should explain who they are:
Far left is Po. He's a m
ischievous little polar bear, happy all the time, but gets into mischief. True to form, he did that last night. Then there's another little guy called Shang. That's short for Shangri La, our favourite hotel in Singapore. The concierge gave him to us. He has the same uniform as the doormen.
Next, the big green animal isn't a bear, it's a wire frame with moss growing on it. So we called him Stirling (after Stirling Moss, the famous British racing driver.) Don't tell him he's a wire frame, tho, because he thinks he's a proper dog. He's a bit sensitive about that kind of thing.
Hanging off his ear is Bungy Lamb who normally hangs upside down in the window at home, but who had to join the party. He has a somewhat different view of the world.
Then, on the right, is Ted. Real name is Tattoo Ted, who came from the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. He's a bit grumpy. Po does things just to irritate him.
So now to explain what's going on. While I was sitting by the fire having a quiet pre-dinner Scotch, Karen assembled all the family and the gifts on the dining table. There's a bottle of fine brandy and the two little bottles are gifts of selected whisky from the "children".
The reason Ted looks grumpier than usual is that Po couldn't wait and while Karen was out of the room, he climbed up and unwrapped the pressies. We knew it was him because he's still holding some of the wrapping ribbon.
The dinner itself was great -- salad for starers, roast venison (for me: Karen doesn't eat meat so she had fish) with a cherry liqueur sauce and roast vegetables, then a selection of French cheeses.
Life isn't all bad.
